Mediation in Consumer Disputes
The Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act is designed to protect purchasers or consumers of goods or services from the harm caused by a misrepresentation made by a seller of the goods or services. Texas law also imposes on most services the requirement (or warranty) that the service be provided in a good and workmanlike manner. If a consumer feels wronged by a merchant because the product did not perform as represented or warranted, the consumer can asset a claim for damages. Other types of consumer claims might involve violations of fair debt collection laws or consumer credit issues. These types of claims often can be successfully resolved through mediation.
AAM was incorporated in 1981 as the Austin Family Mediation Association. In recognition of the growing diversity in the field of mediation, in 1992 AFMA decided to expand its scope and became the Austin Association of Mediators.
